Blog 8 - Initial Ideas

After the original media group had split, we decided we needed to get an idea together quickly so we didn't waste to much time before filming the video and editing. We decided to come together and draw out some rough spider diagrames of potiential ideas for song choice, costume, camera angles, genre and narrative. We wanted to have an idea that is relevent to the chosen genre of pop however also be relistic within the limited time period we had, we also had to consider the availability of things in terms of cast, locations, the camera and also the schedule of when to film. Below are some JPEG file scans of some innitial ideas we came up with before deciding the go ahead with the Rihanna video shoot.

After I had come up with some initial ideas in the form of spider diagrams on a few pieces of paper I decided to present the initial idea in the form of a power point presentation in which I have included images and you tube links to the chosen songs.

Link to Initial Ideas Presentation:

PREVIOUS GROUP IDEA.

During the planning process we used youtube to watch several previous and current music video's by Lady GaGa but also watched several live enterpretations of the song we have chosen. This gave us an insight to how Lady GaGa represents herself and the music on stage and we took a lot of inspiration from these viudeos in planning ideas for our final music video shoot, we bagan by watching several of her own music videos from present and back a few years I was looking out for factors such as costume styling, make-up, dance routines, movements and also setting/location. I feel as Lady Gaga's music videos all have a a sense of their own style and give off a sense of uniqueness which i feel would be very benificial to gain inspiration from, Her use of dramatic story lines within her single releases have made her videos more distinctive and flamboyant which make them "hard to forget" videos such as Papparazzi and Just Dance. whilst watching the performances and videos I noticed her use of mixing several elements together such as Dance routines, solo shots and close ups by using different shots her video's become more visually interesting.

Boys Boys Boys - Live at London's o2 Arena 2009

In her live performances of the track, Lady Gaga uses a team of all male back-up dancers. This is to make her stand out amoungst the dancers within the routine and establish she is the star of the act. This has given us inspiration to use a team of male dancers to relate to the tracks meaning.

The dancers within her live performances are also usually wearing very little clothing, this represents sexuality and desire which is present in a majority of her performances and music videos. All this and use of costume, makeup in the mise-en-scene gives lady gaga's performances some differentation in the market, so we have decided to draw in inspiration from these aspects of performance to use within our music video.

Boys Boys Boys Live performance in 2008.

In this video we had noticed again the use of a all male group of back up dancers, in terms of mise-en-scene they are dressed very flamboyantly which is a style that is accociated with Lady Gaga videos and performances. Within the dance routine we noticed she uses a lot of in sync group dancing with her backup dancers, which I personally found to be very well planned out and has a good effect on the overall performance, She blends in with her dancers throughout movement, however she makes a statement and stands out due to the all male backup dancers used. From watching this performance I have taken the inspiration to use a male cast of dancers to give a more dramatic effect and meaning to the tracks video.

Blog 7 - Copying An Existing Video

As in introductory task for the media coursework, our media group have been set the task to re-create the music video for 'Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus. During this period we would learn about using the camera correctly and learning it's functions, setting up the tripod correctly, fixing the camera to the tripod safely and correctly as well and taking it off. Placing the tapes inside and out the of the camera safely and finally to be able to gain experience directing, being extra within a shot/main character or using the camera independently. All of this has been completed and taught in our Video Production Sessions.

Introduction To Using The Camera

At the start of the media sessions our teacher show
ed a demonstration on how to work the camera's to shoot clips and shots, He then went over each function of the camera. whare they are located, and the effects they will have on the shot you produce. We was also given a rough guideline on the issues and implications which may arise during the filming process such as too much light exposure, depth of field too high/low, poor weather conditions etc. We were then given in detail the key functions of the camera and what affect they will have of shooting such as zooming in/out, creating a shallow depth of field, panning and movements of the camera when using the tripod.

Watching the original video and creating a story board

After we had been shown how to work the camera properly and securley we began to the original music video for teenage dirtbag. After watching it several time we began discussing key concepts of the video and shots that we can adapt and put into our class re-make and what we may have to edit or change slightly due to the circumstances we are in a college. We were then shown a typical story board of a music video and how they work. We filled out a story board for the video and listed things such as the shot type, the description of the action happening within the shot, the mise-en-scene that is visible within the shots, a description of the diagetic sounds, location and shot numbers.

Here is a photo scan of part of the teenage dirtbag storyboard which we filmed.

Practice Shots in small groups

After the story board was complete we were then split into 2 or 3 small groups and we were given a few shooting scripts of specific scenes and we had to re-create them. This gave me a hands on experience with working with the camera and it's functions and putting what i had learnt to the test. I also directed a few shots and p
layed an extra when needed.

Shooting Shots in smaller groups

After the story board for the original video was completed and we had a practice with working with the camera and shooting shots from the video. The group was the divided into three smaller groups again and we were given the chance to have some more hands on experience with working with the camera, direction, and being an actor in a shot. During the filming process we worked with a shooting script in which the director would fill out after each take any problems of issues that arised during the filimg therefore displaying what needs to be double checked before the next take is filmed. The story board was similar to the previous one we had drawn up although this story board was more specific to which shots from the original movie each group was asked to re-create. Myself and the group filmed a variety of shots and in different places around the college campus. My group were filming the first 4 shots from the male lead characters point of view.

This is a screenshot of the clip I recorded when working with the camera, I filmed the scene of the main character asleep on the stars which was the first shot to appear in the video after the establishing opening shot, to create the shot I used a mid shot so the characters body was visable i then tracked in onto the character. I found working with the camera really enjoyable and it helped me to gain confidence when using it, learning the functions and working together with a group.

This is a screenshot in which I filmed a short opening scene to the video Teenage Dirtbag. I filmed the clip using hand held. This was my first real experience when filming so I was rather nervous at first, but I gained a good understanding and experience from it which I think helped in my own video.

This screenshot is taken from the clip recorded by Group B, this was recreating one of the beginning scenes from the teenage dirt bag music video.

Here Is The Video remake for Teenage Dirtbag, with work the group filmed together, enjoy!

More Camera Practice and Experience - Timelapse shooting

Before we finally began to film our music video, we started learning about time lapse video shooting, a time lapse is when the camera is placed on a tripod in a set location for example at the sky and is left recording for a peri
od of the time, the footage can then be played back at a higher speed showing a time lapse of the location, in small groups we was given a task of filming differant time lapse shots over the space of 10 minutes or so. My group and I were asked to film a shot of the sky and also a shot of a member of the group changing locations, giving the effect of fading and moving like a ghost. Unfortunately I had difficulties uploading the quicktime movie onto the blog however below I have taken some screenshot's of the time lapse scenes which myself and my group filmed

This screen shot is taken from the time lapse shooting of the sky with a section of the college building in the bottom corner with the camera placed at an angle.

This screen shot is taken from the time lapse shot in which we shot of a member of the group changing locations within the shot.

Practice with Cameras

* The main purpose of practising working with the camera was simply to get more acquainted with the camera and to also get better at filming, so we have the ability to create a good music video. The practising stages with the camera was taught throughout the filming of the Teenage Dirtbag re-make and also the time lapse shots we filmed. Throughout this process we learnt firstly the difference between Auto and Manual settings of the camera, we were advised to use the Manual settings when creating the music video as the manual setting would give better control over the exposure and the focus of the shot which allows us to get the footage exactly how we desired it on the storyboard. Higher Quality footage is also better to film with desired amounts of exposure and focus.

We also learnt about the white balance and how the settings can be edited to adapt to different lighting conditions in terms of whether you are filming inside or outside. The white balance is set so that the camera knows what white is and can be calibrated so that the colours are filmed consistently. If you don't set the white balance setting properly or at all then inconsistencies within the colours within the footage can be affected and result in useless and un-usable footage.

We also learned about the positioning of the camera in terms of Hand held and also tripod mounting. Using the camera with a tripod keeps the camera more sturdy and makes shots such as panning or zooming much easier and more fluent, the tripod will eliminate any camera shakes and will enable you to film more precisely. Tripod's are also recommended for use of zoon control as this method will exaggerate any camera shaking if not used with a tripod. However using Hand Held methods of filming are also valid in their own rights the approach often will have a more realistic feel to it, however the camera is still required to have as much support as possible (for example using the back of a chair), Zooming whilst using a hand held approach to filming is said to be avoidable as it is impossible to stabilise the camera properly as the zoom would cause an exaggeration to any shakey movements.

The music video - pre planning and production

After the induction to video production lessons where we learned about camera controls, camera safety and testing the skills we've been taught through filming the Teenage Dirtbag video shoot and the time lapse shots, the ball was put in our hands to begin filming our own music video. Firstly we began by putting ourselves into groups in which we will create our music video.

Once we had come up with an idea for the music video, we began by conducting a recce analysis of the locations in which we wished to use for the music video. We visited the two locations to get a better insight on whether or not they would be suitable and be able to convey to feel to the video we was aiming to achieve. The main point of the Recce was to identify accessibility of the locations and whether or not we needed to obtain permission to shoot within the location (for example train stations), Luckily for the group no permission was needed and we was able to gain access to the locations hassle free, however with one of our locations (the fields) we needed to consider things such as a time in which the fields had a lower number of pedestrians on the location and also times of the day where the positioning of the sun to avoid difficulty filming, the weather was also a potential problem with the field location as the weather was unpredictable therefore we had to check local forecasts before arranging a suitable day to film there, we also needed to set a reasonable time to film so we had the best amounts of natural light to ensure the footage was the best standard possible.

After we conducted the Recce we began drawing up a storyboard for the music video to identify what shots are to go where, the mise-en-scene within the shot, the cinematography within the shot such as shot top and also the sound for the shots (what chorous, verse etc). The story board was created so the idea of the music video was continued throughout the filming process and to ensure we don't go off track on the theme of the video and that each shot flows well from the previous shot to the next. To ensure we had a well planned and organised storyboard we conducted a storyboard of approx 25 frames (screenshot of storyboard in blog).

Once we had conducted a well planned and detailed story board for the video we then began to devise a schedule for the video, we began by creating a shooting schedule which included available dates for filming for the cast and the crew, after this we conducted a contact sheet with the cast and crew contact numbers, a call sheet is a simple list of everyone involved within the project with contact details such as mobile numbers, email addresses etc, it provides information of the locations, costumes and equipment. the call sheet ensures we had the ability to contact all group members, teachers and technology staff at college. After this we was able to book the camera and equipment for the shoot The shooting schedule was very important within the planning stage of the video as it helps to keep the production process on track which will help us to meet the deadline on time. It also gave us the opportunity to delegate specific roles to each group member such as music, costume, camera booking etc with deadlines to keep the production flowing.

Booking The Equipment - Booking the camera equipment at college was different to the real world use of booking video equipment, as we didn't have to pay hourly charges in which we had the equipment in our possession. However when booking the equipment we had specific guidelines and deadlines in which we had to meet, firstly we had to book the equipment 48 hours in advance and could only hold the equipment for two days at a time due to the shortage a camera equipment at the college and the high demand from all media students. We had to meet the return time and date clearly as it would impact others who need use of the cameras after us. Before booking the equipment we needed to fill out a risk assessment form, this was to cover the college's insurance policies encase any accidental damage occured during the filming processes.

Once we had the camera and the rest of the equipment booked and began filming we created a 'shooting schedule'. the shooting schedule is used to show each shot and how many takes were filmed to achieve a good shot and what went wrong within previous attempts. The purpose of the shooting schedule is to enable us to write information about each shot and to indicate successful shots and bad shots. The shots are numbered and takes numbered which will make the editing process easier as we can easily locate the good footage from the bad.

We also conducted a Risk Assessment, as we believed it was important and vital in the process of filming to understand the potential health and safety risks that can affect myself, the cast, crew, general members of the public. This enabled us to identify potential risks before we went filming examples are things such as loose wires/cables on the floor, noise levels and damage by the environment.

Production - Filming

During the filming stage of the music video we followed the camera settings and safety in which we were taught in the early stages of the course, when filming we used a tri pod and the manual setting on the camera. We used the tripod for the music video as we wanted high quality footage and we used several zooming and also panning shots therefore the tripod was necessary. We filmed the video is a Standard 4:3 ratio. We used close ups within the video for the built up emotional scene of the chorus of the track to give a better representation of the emotion to the viewer.

During the filming of Teenage Dirtbag we used clapper boards when filming each shot, this was to identify each shot by the number so when it comes to editing the video we know which shot was which and to identify the good shots from the bad, so it is easier and faster to crop each shot from another, it also helps to monitor each shot one by one and keeps record of the shots we have filmed and which shots still need to be filmed. During the filming process I was a main part within the music video therefore I spent the majority of my time being in front of the camera than being behind it, however I filmed a variety of the female characters solo shots and another member of my group directed the shoots. We began filming by calling out 'speed' which lets the operator of the camera to start recording, followed by action to inform the cast to begin the shots and then cut to end recording, after each of the shots the director of the shots gave their opinion on whether the shot was successful or not and whether the shot needs to be re-captured, we then filled in the shooting script with the evaluation on each shot.

Post-Production - Editing

After we had finished shooting the music video, the time came for us to begin editing the footage and putting the music video together, for the music video project we used the programme Final Cut Express which is a lighter version of Final Cut Pro. To begin we opened up final cut express and set the project settings to PAL, this means that the programme plays back at a rate of 24 frames per second. The PAL settings are essential to get right otherwise problems with capturing back the footage would occur. The digital editing is Non-Linear which means unlike traditional editing with film it allows you to structure the sequences in any ways we like such as changing the order of the clips to a way in which we desire the video to turn out, this also allows the fluidity and flexibility when editing as we was able to build the sequence in stages working on the ending first for example.

Once the project was set up correctly we then began to capture back out footage onto a mac book pro and saved it to a file so it was openly accessible, to capture back the footage we attached the camera to the laptop using a firewire cable. We then played the footage back at the same time, we then used timecode and transferred it to the computer.

During the editing process we used three recommended stages in which to manage the time responsibly to ensure we had everything finished within time for the deadline. We began with an 'Assembly Edit' where we had selected all of the best shots from the footage and placed them in a rough line in order, this gave us an insight to what we had shot and to see how it all sequences out. We then conducted a 'Rough Draft' where we cut all of the clips together to see how well the video flows together, we than synced up the footage to the song to make sure the lip sync and the song were synced up together. The lyrics and the music of the song are slow and acoustic therefore during this we slowed down the speed of some of the shots to relate better to the song choice. Finally we began the final cut, we began to place everything together and try our best to ensure that the video was in sync with the music and that the videos shots flow well. We decided not to add any effects to the finished video as we felt that the video didn't need any, we were happy with just the camera effects although we did experiment with some effects such as dissolve and split screen, however we felt it all looked a little bit to much and took focus away from the message we wanted to put across within the music video.

Blog 6 - Video Analysis

In this blog I have chosen three music video's, one from from my chosen artist with some analysis on certain elements of the videos. and two of another of the same musical genre

Video 1) Don't Stop The Music - Rihanna

YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd8jh9QYfEs

Don't Stop The Music was the third single taken from Rihanna's third album Good Girl Gone Bad, the video is set within a night club/late night scene environment. The genre of the video of the video is leisure, fun, party and sexual in relation towards some of the lyrics. The video represented youth culture and a party/fun lifestyle through the video's setting, mise-en-scene and also the song lyrics and sound, the setting off a nightclub and costumes represent young people having fun on a night out, the dance beat track to the song also matches with a more stereotyped youth type of music known as dance music however others could see it as a modernised version of disco, this therefore makes it more difficult to generalise the target audiences, however a rough estimation for this kind of video would be young individuals aged between 18 - 30) simply due to the setting and environment of the video as club culture is commonly more popular in early years of adulthood. The video communicates many varieties of meaning to it's audiences, in the opening the scene of the video Rihanna is shown sneaking into the club and making a 'ssshhh' pose to a small boy, this could be seen as rebellious as it can indicate that she wasn't supposed to be in that club environment. Sexuality is also represented as a meaning throughout the lyrics of the song, and the body language of Rihanna herself, the lyrics state 'and now were rocking on the dance floor acting naughty, your hands around my waist' which can show the representation of sexual influences and urges throughout the club experience. Rihanna's body language throughout the video also help to represent this, especially in her solo shots.

Dont Stop The Music Video Screenshots

For the next two video's I decided to analyse two videos from Lady GaGa, I decided to do this because firstly both Rihanna and Lady GaGa fall into the pop music genre, and I felt that Lady GaGa's music video had a lot of prospectives that could be analysed in terms of genre, representations and creating a meaning.

Video 2) Just Dance - Lady GaGa

Just Dance was the debut single taken From Lady GaGa's first album The Fame which was released in 2008. The video is set in a house in the style of a house party, this takes the video to have a genre of leisure, youth culture, representing a young, party, wild life style. It's representation is displayed through the setting, mise-en-scene, dance moves etc. it represents mostly youth culture and the lifestyle of a party driven individual and group of individuals partying all night long with influences and abuse of alcohol, smoking and vandalism/mess. The video's audience is aimed towards youths within the music industry fan base as people between the ages of 16 - 25 will relate mostly to the videos meaning of the party lifestyle such as students and individuals with time to spend partying in clubs/pubs and house parties and being out of control. The music video communicates a meaning to it's audience through the setting, mise-en-scene, lyrics and dance moves, the mise-en-scene such as the costumes are make-up are extremely dramatic and wild which many youths today can understand and relate to. The dance moves within the music video and the body language is rather sexual and promiscuous which is a style which is mostly labelled towards youths in society rather than older generations. However the video includes one or more older actors within the scenes of the video which can also represent older generations having the similar life styles as youths breaking a given stereotype.

Video 3) Beautiful Dirty Rich - Lady GaGa

Beautiful, Dirty Rich was a promotional single taken from Lady GaGa's number 1 album The Fame in 2008. It wasn't released in the UK but had good chart success within the United States and across other countries around the world. The Genre of this video is wealth and money which is represented through the video and lyrics "we're beautiful and dirty rich, dirty dirty rich rich dirty dirty beautiful" the lyrics represent having wealth makes you beautiful and evan dirty. Wealth is represented throughout the video's shots of Lady GaGa's character rolling around in money and having so much she can burn money away. The video also represents a form of youth culture of leisure and party lifestyles, this is shown through party scenes and shots within the video where alcohol is being consumed and smoking drugs using money as papers. This can also represent a rebelious side which again is more labelled towards youths this is also shown in the videos narrative. The audience for the video again is likely to be aimed at a younger audience due to the party theme and lifestyle however the representation of having too much money can also be directly linked towards older generations who has secure careers and success. The video for Beauiful, Dirty, Rich communicates it's meaning through imagery through it's mise-en-scene and setting. The video is set in a big fancy styled house which instantly represents wealth, the props of money all over the place also shows wealth and greed, the body language of Lady GaGa's character within the video shows a sense of success and pride of having all this money and being able to roll in it literally.

Blog 5 - Target Audience of Artist/Band

Chosen Artist: Rihanna

The target audience for R&B/Pop artist Rihanna is generally for the younger/young adult generations however her music is seen as popular with a variety of ages and also genders. Her musical target audience and fan base is generally down to individuals interpretations of her music however her music tends to bias more towards the younger generations through her style of music, lyric and also music video for example her track 'S&M' can be interpreted in different ways, a fun and upbeat making a comical response to a sexual prefer
ence or it could be seen as a violation of her musical abilities by some causing it to be banned from TV music channels and shortened radio play or beeped out lyrics.

Rihanna's music genre and styles tend to change from album to album which can affect the kind of audience she is trying to reach, her current album Loud has tended to go back to the more pop and fun with contemporary dance anthem sounds, similar to how she began in her early music career, this style fits in perfectly with the modern pop music industry and keeps her fan base widely spread.

In terms of demographics, her target audiences and fan base are mixtures a males and female, Lady Gaga is especially a well known figure within the gay community also. The wealth and income to her audiences is highly varied as everyone has open access to her music through sales or youtube.

Psychographically, the fan base of Rihanna tends to be varied and open as it's down to individual interpretation of her music and music video. Generally her target audience would likely be youthful, lively and individuals who like to dance and have lyrics they can relate to and enjoy to equip to all kinds of moods. An interest in her genre of style of music is essential so most fans would have a real apprication of electro-pop mixed with dance beats over a traditional pop sounding track.

In terms of socio-economic grouping, her target audience would mostly be aimed towards younger individuals such as Students (16 - 25), semi-skilled manual workers such as builders, hairdressers, plumbers, professional occupations such as businessmen and women. there is no set socio-economic grouping towards Rihanna's music, however her music video lean fur
ther towards the younger generations, due to their understanding or appriciation which may not come accross towards older generations and higher positioned individuals an example of this would be her Rated R track 'Rude Boy' in which Rihanna's lyrics quote "common Rude Boy can you get it up?" these sexual related lyrics may only be seen as acceptable with a younger generation of listeners.

Analysis of some of Rihanna's magazine shoots

Cover girl Spokeswomen

In 2008 shortly after the release of her third album
Good Girl Gone Bad, Rihanna was approached and became a spokes girl for US Beauty Giant Cover Girl cosmetics. This
shows a softer and beauty queen side to the pop singer, which will show appeal to young girls and young women on a global scale. Female fans will aspire to look and feel like Rihanna when wearing cover girl cosmetics. This type of campaign and beauty shots shows Rihanna's elegance and purity which many female audiences will positively respond to.

GG Magazine - Male Orientated Audience.

Rihanna graced the cover of GQ magazine shortly after the release of her fourth studio album Rated R. In the image Rihanna is wearing minimal amounts of clothing and is almost baring her breasts, this shows a more sexual and desirability to Rihanna in which will catch the attention of her Male audiences, seeing her as the woman that they wish they were with and admire her for her assets, this style of magazine shoots shows raunchy, sex appeal and desire in which attracts and appeals to a masculine and macho audience, compared to the cover girl magazine/advertisement.

Vogue
In early 2011 after her release of her contemporary album Loud, Rihanna was asked to grace her first ever cover of fashion magazine Vogue. In this photo shoot Rihanna is represented as glamorous, fashionable, sensual and a real diva. As Vogue is a major fashion magazine which is distributed world wide, the targeted audience here is most likely to be female's ranging from the ages of 18 - 30's) who have a key eye for the latest fashion trends and styles in which to keep up to date and on top. Rihanna's glamorous wardrobe gives her the desired look in which many females will respond positively to, they want to look as stunning as she does in the high fashion garments inside vogue.

Rihanna's Twitter Fanpage

After having a look around Rihanna's page on Social Networking Site Twitter, I have noticed she has a big variety of fans in which follow her 'tweets' everyday. This shows real diversity in her audiences and that her music relates to a variety of ages, genders and ethnic backgrounds on a global scale.

Due to our original media group separating due to differences and ability to work well together, the new group had no choice but to change our initial idea completely, however below is the original work created for the original media group.

Chosen Artist: Lady Gaga

The target audience for Lady Gaga is generally for younger generations although other generations may be a fan due to individual interpretations. Her target audience and fan base is mostly made up of individuals who have a love for dance pop, eltro-pop beats who like an edge on the general pop genre of music which gives her a competitive uniqueness in the market.

In terms of demographics, her target audiences and fan base are mixtures a males and female, Lady Gaga is especially a well known figure within the gay community also. The wealth and income to her audiences is highly varied as everyone has open access to her music through sales or youtube.

Psychographically, the fan base of Lady Gaga tends to be varied and open as it's down to individual interpretation of her music and music video. Generally her target audience would likely be youthful, lively and quite rebeleous. An interest in her genre of style of music is essential so most fans would have a real apprication of electro-pop mixed with dance beats over a traditional pop sounding track. In her music Lady Gaga represents quite a party-styled life style therefore many of her fanbase and target market would be individuals with a 'wild side' this is also reflected in her music video's for singles such as 'Just Dance'.

In terms of socio-economic grouping, her target audience would mostly be aimed towards younger individuals such as Students (16 - 25), semi-skilled manual workers such as builders, hairdressers, plumbers, professional occupations such as businessmen and women. there is no set socio-economic grouping towards Lady Gaga's music however her music video learn further towards the younger generations, due to their understanding or appriciation which may not come accross towards older generations and higher positioned individuals.

Magazine Spreads Featuring Lady GaGa.

Elle - Women's fashion magazine

By featuring on this magazine Lady Gaga is appealing to a Female gendered audience. Her unique fashion is another aspect of her and impacts her fanbase and target audience just as much as her music.

Billboard Magazine - Music Magazine.

By featuring on this type of magazine Lady Gaga is appealing to a wider range of audience, that could be either Male or Female and a variety of music taste in the Top chart positions. This magazine shoot simple advertises Lady Gaga's music other than her fashion in contrast to the Elle Magazine shoot.

Blog 4 - Permission

Once we had chosen the song for the music video we were required to write out an e-mail to the record coming who have ownership and loyalties to that song asking them for permission in which to use their song for our music video.

Blog 3 - Song Choice

The song we have chosen to create and film the music video for is California King Bed by R&B/Pop artist Rihanna, taken from her latest album Loud. We chose this song because we felt it had powerful and strong lyrics which we could use to portray a love story within the music video.

During the selection process we decided to stick to the Pop music genre as we felt that it would be a more enjoyable experience in which to film a video, myself and my group are also fans of this genre and thought that sticking with this genre would help us to create a better narrative and storyline.

We came up with a selection of tracks from Katy Perry, Lady GaGa and also another track from Rihanna, in the end we decided on the slow ballad from rihanna's portfolio of music simply because we decided to choose a balled to give us more access to create a dramatic and fairtytale like storyline which people could relate to within the artists target audience when they watch it.

Blog 2 - Exploring Music Video

Exploring Music Videos

During the final few weeks of the AS course a music documentry was screened to show the top 100 music videos of all time. The documentry consisted of music video's from a variety of artists, genres, decades etc. For this blog I have personally selected 4 music videos for analysis.

Video Selections with Analysis.

Video 1) Beyonce Knowles - Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) [2009, Sony BMG]

The video for Beyonce Knowles's top 10 hit Single Ladies uses a variety of old fashioned and modern aspects. The video is kept plain and simple by firstly having just Beyonce and two female backing dancers, this video layout is uncommon in the present day as budgets are much higher and technology has improved drastically. The video is also filmed in Black and White this gives the video more sensitivity to lighting, shadows and details which can emphasis the dancing. The representation in the music video help to reflect the lyrics of the song, to express power and independence in Females, the choreography in the video is based upon older decades of dancing but mixed in well with present day dance. The dance makes this video well known. The audience of the music videos is both male and female, it targets females as the dance and lyrics are very empowering and inspirational towards a female audience. Males may also enjoy the video due to the physical appearance of Beyonce and the dancers, things such as costume, styling and lighting can help emphasise this. By using a powerful dance routine in the video helps connect the video to the lyrics of the song. The main genre of the Beyonce Single Ladies video is likely to be Female Strength and Power this is shown through the message in the song and it's video.

Video 2) - Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U [1990]

The music video shot for Sinead O'Connors Number one hit 'Nothing Compares 2 U' has a much softer and gentle style and vibe in comparison to the first video I have analysed. The video consists of mostly close ups of the face of Sinead, this helps to show the purity and the emotions of the artist during the video which capture the lyrics perfectly and cause the viewer to feel the emotion the song and video are trying to portray. The video's representation are focused more on the artist and the emotions she is feeling whilst singing the lyrics, the video represents the song as a heart aching emotional ballad, this is achieved through the close ups of the face and the overlay of imagery. The video communicates the meaning of the song by having Sinead simply singing the lyrics with tears welling up in her eyes, by having it stripped down and simple it shows vulnerability and honesty which will relate to more viewers in a personal way especially female viewers.

Video 3) - Christina Aguilera - Dirrty [2004]

Dirrty was a complete new image, style and feel for young teen star Christina Aguilera, the video made quiet an impact when it was first released. The genre for the video and the song can be of many topics the main three that come to mind are Rebelion, Sexuality and Femininity, these are represented in the styling, dancing and location. Christina wears a very sexy flesh revealing costume which represents sexuality and can appeal more to a male orientated audience. Rebelion is represented through the dance moves the staging and set and the fact that Christina was a young teen star when she released her first hit single, there involved many shots of male and female dance interactions which include physical and sexual moves such as thrust this is representing sexuality is present in both the video and the song it's filmed for. As the song is entitled 'Dirrty' the music video is communicating that meaning through the dance moves the moves consist of loads of thrusting and sexual moves such as sliding etc. The video and it's choreography is very controversial and may offend or dishearten some music video fans. The video is set in a club like setting which is also associated with a younger rebellious age group. The audience for this type of music video would normally be aimed at a male audience due to the dress styling, dance moves as men will find the 'sex appeal' attractive, however the video can attract a female audience creating a desire to 'be like her' or 'look like her'.

Video 4) Madonna - Vogue [1980's]

Madonna's video for the single 'Vogue' is based on the representations of glamour, leisure, luxury and fashion. It is shot using Black and White film which captures light and texture to the costumes, facial expressions, shadows and lighting. The video's representation of Glamour and Luxury is definitely expressed through the costumes and the set of the video, by using a mansion like set with piano's show wealth and style. The use of suits, gowns and feather bowers create the image of glamour and fashion which reflects the songs lyrics perfectly as it is titled after a fashion magazine 'Vogue'. The video communicates the meaning by the song by these factors and give off a positive message that anyone can be glamorous and be someone in a vogue magazine. The choreography in the video is bold and distinctive which make the video appear. Madonna's hand and body gestures also represent the glamorous life of the rich and famous. The video's main audience would likely to be females as the video is very feminine and 'fabulous' this is seen through the costumes, dancing and the lyrics of the song, however males can also be fans of the video as Madonna was a 'sex symbol' and many will appreciate the video through physical attraction to her.
